"What!?" Manic demanded, his eyes flashing. "Sonic has been put in confinement with Shadow!?"

"Shhh," Silver pleaded at a whisper. "Don't yell so much."

"I don't understand. Why the hell would they put Sonic in confinement with Shadow? Isn't it only for one person?" Manic said, barely lowering his voice.

"Yes, but the rumor is that Shadow did something at the binding ceremony that made Tails- - I mean Director Miles angry and he's punishing Shadow by throwing him in confinement with Sonic. See, according to Scourge, Shadow can't be punished in the normal way."

"What do you mean 'in the normal way?'?" Manic asked.

"I'm not so sure myself," Silver answered. "All I know is that Shadow doesn't respond to being locked in a small windowless room by himself for days at a time. He just doesn't care."

"So why drag Sonic into all this?"

"Think, Manic!! Shadow hates the idea of Sonic being his mate and doesn't want anything to do with him. By locking him in the same room as Sonic for three days, Tails is ensuring that Shadow isn't going to do whatever he did again."

"But what exactly did Shadow do?"

"No one knows."

Manic sighed softly in annoyance. "I just hope he's all right."

Silver's amber eyes were filled with worry as he answered, "So do I."

……………………………………………………………….

Sonic sighed softly as he leaned back against one of the cold walls. He could understand how Shadow felt at home in a cold, dark room with no one else present. He was a cold person.

"Excuse me?" Shadow's cold voice demanded through the darkness.

Sonic let out a small eep of surprise, his hand flying to his mouth.

"I am so sorry!" he gasped. "I didn't know I said that out loud."

There was silence for a while.

"What do you mean?" Shadow finally asked.

"What?" Sonic asked.

"What do you mean when you said I was a cold person?"

"Um…nothing really," Sonic said quickly.

"Tell me, you little wimp!"

Sonic cringed. "It's just…" he took a deep breath. "I don't know if anyone's told you this, but it's true. You don't seem to give a damn about anyone or anything. You push me away even though you don't know me at all. You don't even want to give me a chance or get to know me at all."

The tears he was struggling to hold back came forward. He reached up and gently brushed them away, glad it was dark.

'At least Shadow can't see me crying,' He thought.

"Why the hell are you crying?" Shadow asked.

Sonic mentally cursed himself. He had a really bad habit of voicing his thoughts out loud without even knowing it.

"Well?" Shadow demanded.

Sonic shook his head and tried to control himself but he couldn't stop the tears from flowing out of his eyes.

"I'm waiting."

"I don't give a damn!" Sonic managed to choke out. "Just leave me alone you cold heartless bastard!"

"Is that all you have to say?" Shadow asked coldly.

"No!" Sonic yelled. "I'm not done you jerk! Any normal person who had an ounce of humanity in him would understand what I'm going through! I've just been taken from my home, my life and thrown into this place and I'm all alone and scared to death!! And now knowing that I have to spend the rest of my life with you makes it even more unbearable! Any normal person would feel compassion but I guess you can't do that, can you!? You have nothing but ice running through your veins! You've made my life a living hell!! So, I hope you're happy!!"

He felt sort of bad for yelling at Shadow like that, but he didn't regret it at all. He knew he was speaking only the truth. He couldn't take the words back now.

…………………………………………………………..

Silver and Manic were slightly afraid to see the state Sonic was in after spending three days alone with Shadow in confinement, but Sonic had grown on them so they waited outside the confinement area. Shadow was led out first, surrounded by several guards. His ebony quills were a mess and his clothes were wrinkled, but he looked fine otherwise. Silver and Manic knew that he was fine because he glared coldly at them as he passed. A few moments later, Sonic appeared led by one of the other guards. He managed a weak smile when he saw them.

"Are you okay? You look like crap!!" Manic blurted out, earning him a jab in the ribs from Silver.

Sonic laughed. "Yeah, I probably do. I haven't been able to shower in three days."

"Well you didn't miss much. Oh yeah, one of the other Carriers had his heat and made the Semes go nuts. Maybe it was a good thing you and Shadow weren't there. Things sort of got out of hand. But it wasn't anything the guards couldn't handle."

As Manic jabbered on, Silver studied Sonic's face further. He was smiling, but his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. He made a mental note to try and talk to Sonic later, privately. He got his chance a lot sooner than he thought. Sonic excused himself from breakfast to take a shower and Silver made up his mind to skip breakfast to talk to him. He wasn't that hungry anyways. The two of them didn't speak until they were well out of earshot.

"So how was it really in there with Shadow?" Silver asked softly as they walked to the dormitories.

"Not that good," Sonic admitted. "It was a long three days."

"What happened?"

"Well, for the first part of the first day, we sat in total silence. I accidently voiced my opinion about him being cold and as you can imagine, Shadow didn't exactly take that lying down."

Silver nodded, wincing at the image of Shadow's angry face.

"We ended up getting into a shouting match that lasted the majority of the first day. Day two was spent in silence for the majority of the time. This morning, we got into another argument."

"What did you fight about?"

"Does it even matter?"

"Well, yeah."

"It wasn't really that important. Just the usual; him being a bastard and stuff."

Silver was silent for a while.

"I'm a little bit surprised," he finally admitted.

"Why's that?" Sonic asked, turning around.

"I just didn't think you'd yell at Shadow. I thought he'd be the one always yelling at you."

Sonic blushed. "I felt sort of bad about yelling at him, but I don't regret it. He deserved it every word of it."

Silver smiled. Sonic went into the community bathroom and stripped. He stepped into one of the showers and turned it on. He sighed softly and ran his fingers through his quills, trying to untangle a few kinks.

When he had finished, he switched the hot water off and toweled himself off. He pulled on a new set of clothes and threw the dirty ones in a hamper. Silver was waiting in the dormitories for him to finish. Without saying a word, the two of them headed for their first class.

It was apparent how much had changed between Shadow and Sonic when Sonic stepped into the room. Shadow looked up and sent a cold glare at his mate that made everyone else feel frigid, but Sonic simply returned the glare. Silver put a hand on his shoulder, wondering for the first time if he would have to restrain Sonic. The azure teen simply took his seat and pretended that Shadow wasn't there. Scourge looked at Silver in surprise. Silver shrugged.

Sonic's new behavior did not wear off after several days or even several months. He acted the same towards everyone else, but when Shadow was around, he would become silent and moody. Life at the Institute settled down in the aftermath of Sonic's arrival, though the talk did not die down. Rumors flew of Sonic and Shadow's standoff in confinement and their new standoff. People were even starting to place bets about the nature of their relationship and whether one of them was going to crack or not.

"Well, this has brought about one good thing," Manic muttered to Silver one day.

"Oh yeah? What's that?" Silver asked as he watched Sonic take his lunch tray to the garbage can.

"He's given us a hobby to kill the time."

Silver snorted but couldn't deny that Manic was right. Things had certainly become interesting when Sonic arrived at The Institute. There hadn't been so much excitement since he'd arrived, unless you counted the Carriers going into heat, but that always ended the same-the Carrier and his mate would go do their thing and the lust would stop. They never knew how things would turn out between Shadow and Sonic and each day was as exciting as the one before.

At first, Silver had been surprised when Sonic occasionally lashed out at Shadow—he had never known the azure to be capable of being mean, but he grew used to it. He realized that it was Shadow who pushed Sonic so far and, in turn, Sonic pushed Shadow, causing both of them to do things no one would have otherwise thought them capable of doing. He had a feeling that Shadow loved Sonic but was trying to deny it and he was pretty sure that Sonic was smitten with Shadow, but since Shadow was denying his own feelings, Sonic was not making it easy at all. Somehow things would work out. That was one thing he was absolutely sure of. No matter how hard Shadow tried to deny it, Sonic was incredibly good looking, kind (though he didn't always show it), and sincere.

"He's going to make a great mate. Shadow just doesn't see it yet," he said to no one in particular.
And here everyone thought that 'something' was going to happen while they were in confinement. You pervs XD
